Professor Steven Botterill

We are saddened to report that Professor Steven Botterill passed away on 5 May 2018 in the midst of treatments for cancer.    He was 60 years old.  Best known for his monograph, Dante and the Mystical Tradition: Bernard of Clairvaux in the “Commedia” (Cambridge University Press, 1994; reprinted 2005), Professor Botterill joined the Berkeley faculty in 1986 and introduced generations of students to medieval Italian literature.  He served the university as an able administrator, most recently as Director of the University of California’s Education Abroad Program in Italy from 2015-2017.  He is survived by his husband Craig Davidson.  The link below is to the obituary published in The San Francisco Chronicle:
